Mainroad Theme

Let’s have a look at how this theme processes and renders the different Markdown codes. We ’ll use more or less the same order as the Markdown quickref. As text filler we’ll use the wonderful Bacon Ipsum. Do check the original markdown document,to understand the actual usage of the different codes.

There are some issues to take in consideration when using Mainroad:

put an extra newline before starting a list (bug?)
always add an extra newline before a ruler (bug?)
code blocks do not have syntax specific syntax colouring.
there is no multilevel indenting with lists

Use 2 newlines for a paragraph break; use 2 or more spaces at the end of a sentence for a simple break.

The following filler is emphasised (italic); the next filler is double emphasised (bold).

Let’s have a go with numbered and unnumbered lists:

item 2 has no subitems, use 2 trailing spaces to have a new line and no new paragraph

Links and images are typically added with the angle brackets, use inline-style for small links (in site) or use reference-style for absolute references.

Hugo and Markdown allow for the quick and easy generation of static websites.

And adding images is also a piece of cake, like this logo of Hugo:

It is difficult though to format or position images, this is not at all possible for the moment. The focus is clearly on content and not on form. If granular positioning of images is needed, use directly HTML.

Block quoting can be handy for references; it looks like email type quotes. If needed it can be combined with other Markdown codes.

Tables are a bit quirky and don’t allow that much control. It is possible though to manipulate the alignment per column by using : in the table header separator. Tables without headers are not possible.

Markdown allows for so called code blocks that are excellent to document code. Depending on the theme it should have some different syntax colouring. It can alos be used inline.

No language indicated, so no syntax highlighting. But let's throw in a <b>tag</b> for good meaure. This is how a link looks like in [Markdown][https://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/ syntax].

It’s also possible to embed HTML in the Markdown document, but you cannot mix Markdown and HTML. This is especially handy for specific effects that standard Markdown and the template used did not foresee.
